İngilizlerin Kudüs’ü Ele Geçirmesi ve General Edmund H.H. Allenby’nin Kudüs’e Törenle Girişi (9–11 Aralık 1917)

Türklerin başarısız iki Kanal Seferinden sonra İngilizler Sina Çölünü kontrol altına alarak Filistin’e dayanmıştı. Türkler Gazze-Birüssebi hattında savunmaya geçerek Mart ve Nisan 1917’deki 2 büyük İngiliz saldırısını püskürtmeyi başarmıştı. Ancak İngilizler olağanüstü insan, cephane ve malzeme yardımı alarak bu hatta direnmeye çalışan Türkleri 1917 sonunda yenmeyi ve 40 gün süren muharebe ve takip sonunda 9 Aralık 1917’de Kudüs’e girmeyi başarmıştı. Mısır Seferi Kuvveti Kumandanı General E.H.H. Allenby, 11 Aralık 1917’de resmî bir törenle şehre girdi. Törende Kudüs hakkında uygulanacak genel İngiliz politikası bir beyanname ile çeşitli dillerde açıklandı. Çok kısa süren tören boyunca şehrin ileri gelenlerini de kabul etmiş ve Türklerle savaşa kaldığı yerden devam etmek üzere şehirden ayrılmıştı. Bu çalışmada Türk kaynaklarında pek rastlanmayan, Kudüs’ün İngilizler tarafından işgal edildiği ilk üç günde yaşananlar hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir.

The Capture of Jerusalem by British and Official Entry of Edmund H.H. Allenby’s to Jerusalem (9-11 December 1917)

After failure of two Turkish campaigns against Suez Canal, the British took control of Sinai Desert and reached the frontier of Palestine. The Turks withdrawn to the Gaza-Beersheba line and two great British assaults on Gaza repulsed. After receiving large reinforcement the British captured Gaza and Beersheba and began to pursuit the Turks. After 40 days pursuit and fighting the British entered Jerusalem in 9 December 1917. General E.H.H. Allenby who was Commander in Chief of Egyptian Expeditionary Force, and the procession officially entered Jerusalem in 11 December 1917. Allenby issued a Proclamation in which was stated the general policy of Britain in the future. The ceremony took very short time. At the same time, Allenby received the notables of the City and the heads of religious communities. Then, he left the city for going on fighting with the Turks. In this article, first 3 days of occupation of Jerusalem by the British and what was going on those days has been examined.
