Respiratory Acidosis and Compensatory Responses in Upper Respiratory Tract Obstruction due to Retropharyngeal Abscess in a Holstein Cow
In this case report, respiratory acidosis and compensatory response in upper respiratory tract obstruction due to a retropharyngeal abscess, which is rarely seen in cattle, is described in a three years old Holstein cow. The case was brought with a complaint of swelling in the throat region and respiratory difficulty. The case was defined as a retropharyngeal abscess according to the location of the lesion, clinical and radiographic findings. Granulocytic leukocytosis, respiratory acidosis, hypokalemia, and hypocalcaemia were detected in the hematological and blood gas analyzes of the case. After the medical treatment, the clinical findings were improved, the abscess was significantly reduced, and caseous appearance on the radiography was significantly decreased. Moreover, granulocytic leukocytosis disappeared and respiratory acidosis was significantly compensated. As a result, it is concluded that the application of medical treatment for a sufficient period of time to ensure complete recovery of the abscess is important in the compensation of respiratory acidosis.
