The light microscopical investigations on postnatal development of the duodenal mucosa of the female guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)

This study was carried out to investigate the light microscopical changes in the duodenal mucosa of guinea pigs during postnatal development. Duodenum was obtained by laparoscopic surgery and then were fixed in buffered 10% formalin. The sections (5-7 urn) were cut in paraffin blocks and stained with haematoxylen-eosin and periodic acide Schiff stains. The study population was consisted of 56 female guinea pigs. In the duodenal mucosa, the main mucosal constituents, such as villi intestinales, lining cells of intestinal crypts, intestinal and duodenal glands were present at born. It was determined that they were increased both number and height accordance to age. It was seen that height of villus and depth of crypt were increased very important onl4 days of age. The goblet cells of villi were higher and narrower than those of crypts.
