PRIORITIZATION OF LEAN MANUFACTURING PRACTICES DURING THE PANDEMIC PERIOD: CASE OF AUTOMOTIVE PARTS MANUFACTURERS

The effect of the global Covid-19 pandemic has caused many automotive parts manufacturing companies to suspend their production. Lean production, which is one of the best tools of sustainable production, has gained more importance at this point. The decrease in the stock of raw materials caused disruptions in the production process and the customer demand was not met. Businesses that have already adopted the lean production philosophy attach more importance to lean applications. This study also conducted research to determine which lean production tools primarily used by the companies producing automotive parts during this process. The research shows the orientation of the production engineers of 42 automotive part manufacturer companies that stated that they use lean production tools. As a result of the survey, which explains the preference of lean production tools in this process by using an interpretative structural model, it has been revealed that the most preferred lean production tool in the pandemic process is total efficient maintenance and error prevention systems. The reasons for this are that the idle machines will be serviced and that periodic maintenance is given importance because the supply of the necessary repair part may come late in case of a malfunction that may occur during production. A second lean manufacturing tool is the defect prevention system. It has been revealed that they have developed poke-yoke tools in the improvements in their processes. The operability of the model used contributes to both the literature and the industry in terms of preventing the situations that interrupt the production of the companies that produce automotive parts during the pandemic process..
