The effects of L-carnitine on streptozotocin inducerd diabetes mellitus and oxidative stress

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of L-carnitine on preventing diabetes nd its effects on pancreas lipid peroxidation. Material and Methods: Adult Wistar Albino male rats were used in this study. Single dose 65 mg/kg IP. streptozotocin enjected to onset experimental diabetes mellitus. SOD, GPx and glucose measurements made by spectrophotometric methods. Protein levels were measured by Markwell's modified Lowry method and MDA levels were measured by the method of Rehnchona et al. Results: Giving L-carnitine prior to treptozotocin did not have any effects on the blood glucose levels in diabetes induced by treptozotocin. There was no significant change on the pancreas süperokside dismutase enzyme activity and TEARS levels, however glutathione peroksidase (GPx) activity was found to be increased in the diabetic group and compared the carnitin-taking group and the carnitin-taking diabetic group. Conclusion: No effect of L-carnitine was observed on streptozotocin induced diabetes.
