Bu araştırma, “Allah’ın peygamberini incitmeniz ve kendisinden sonra, O’nun eşleriyle evlenmeniz, size asla helâl değildir. ”ayetinin sebeb-i nüzulü ile ilgili rivayetleri, senet ve metin açısından eleştirel tarzda ele alıp, yukarıdaki ayet ile ilgili aktarılan kıssada geçen zat hakkında gelen değişik rivayetleri -kıssanın anlaşılmasında ayetin bağlamının delâletini göz önünde bulundurarak -inceler. Bu inceleme, yukarıdaki ayet-i kerime ile ilgili kıssanın sahih bir yolla gelmediğini, bununla ilgili en güzel rivayetin, kıssa ile ilgili zatın isminin geçmediği bir Mürsel isnad şeklinde olduğunu saptar. Ayrıca bu araştırma, Talha b. Ubeydullah (r.a)’ ın isminin geçtiği her rivayetin çok zayıf olduğunu, doğru olanın, yukarıdaki ayetin-ayetin bağlamı delâlet ettiği gibi -Münafıklar hakkında indiğini belirtir.

This paper is a critical analysis of the all the narrations that relate to the reason why the verse ‘And you may certainly not offend the Messenger of Allah, nor ever marry his wives after him’ (al-A?zab, 53) was revealed. The texts and chains of narration for each have been examined and explained in detail, with close attention to difference of the narrations about whom the verse was revealed, and the context of the actual verse. It concludes that none of the narrations can be authenticated rigorously: the strongest narration is an expedient (mursal) report and it does not mention who the person in question was; anything that was narrated by ?alha Ibn ‘Ubayd-‘Allah is severely weak. The verse actually pertains to the hypocrites, as is clear from its context.
