Özet: Bu çalışmanın amacı yirminci yüzyıl otobiyografi yazımındaki gelişmeleri incelemektir.Hızlı değişimlerin yaşandığı bu dönemde otobiyografi de yeni düşüncelerin ışığındahem nicelik hem nitelik açısından önemli değişikliklere uğramış, edebi bir tür olmayolunda büyük mesafe kaydetmiştir. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde yirminci yüzyıl öncesieserlerde insanın kendi öz yaşamına ait verdiği bilgilerin otobiyografik bir anlam taşıyıptaşımadığı tartışılmakta, hemen her döneme ait düşünceler bazı örneklerle verilmektedir.İkinci bölümde, artık insanın rahatça ‘ben’ diyebildiği yirminci yüzyılda daha bilinçli biryazı türü olarak otobiyografinin kabaca üç dalga halinde geliştiği ve edebiyat dünyasınakatkıda bulunduğu açıklanmaktadır. Sonuçta ise yüzyılın sonunda otobiyografi yazımınınhız kesmediği, değişimler olsa bile, insanların öz yaşamlarını edebi bir dille aktarmaedimlerinin bundan sonra da sürme eğiliminde olduğu vurgulanmaktadır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Otobiyografi, yirminci yüzyıl, Batı, tür, benContemporary Autobiography WritingAbstract: The aim of this study is to examine the developments in autobiographywriting in the twentieth century. In this era of rapid changes, autobiography changed alot in the light of new ideas both quantitatively and qualitatively and gained momentumin the way to become a literary genre. In the first section of the study, it is discussedwhether the information given by humans in the before-twentieth-century works bearany significance from autobiographical perspective. Ideas of almost every age are givenwith some specific examples. In the second section, it is explained that, in the twentiethcentury where one can easily say ‘I’, autobiography as a more conscious mode of writingdeveloped roughly in three waves and that it contributed much to the literary world.Consequently, it is emphasized that even at the end of the century, autobiography writingcontinued with the same speed, and despite some changes, people would be inclined torelate their life stories in a literary form.Keywords: Autobiography, twentieth century, W
