Premature adrenarche and its importance

Apperance of pubic hair, with or without aksillary hair development, due to the activation of adrenal androgen secretion before eight years of age in girls and nine years in boys, is named as premature adrenarche. It occurs more frequently in girls than in boys and its definite diagnosis is basicly depend on eliminating the other reasons causing occurrence of pubic hair. Although PA looks like a benign condition, not necessitating a specific treatment, it gained more importance recently because of its metabolic and endocrine effects, which were discussed in detail here. These patients should be followed-up to post-puberty and adulthood because of these potential effects.
