Congenital Hepatitis C Infection

Since the program of the hepatitis B virus vaccination started, hepatitis C virus (HCV) has become the most significant cause of chronic liver disease of infectious etiology in pediatric age. After the introduction of hepatitis C virus screening of blood units, vertical transmission now seems to be the most common route of hepatitis C virus infection in children. Both viral and host related factors are of importance as risk factors in vertical HCV transmission. Although hepatitis C virus associated liver disease is usually mild throughout infancy and childhood, progression to chronicity occurs in the majority of perinatally infected children. Treatment of HCV infected children has not been studied extensively. More effective and less toxic therapies for young patients with HCV are needed, as are methods to interrupt perinatal transmission of HCV.
