Valentine Chirol’e Gecikmiş Bir Cevap: İngiltere’nin Propaganda Savaşları, Çanakkale, Fitzmaurice ve Diğerleri

İstanbul Büyükelçiliği Baştercümanı Gerald Fitzmaurice ile 1908–1914 döneminde İstanbul’da İngiliz Büyükelçiliği yapan Gerard Lowther, söz konusu periyotta Osmanlı – İngiliz ilişkilerine tesir etmiş önemli isimlerdir. Bununla beraber onlar Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndaki siyasi ve toplumsal gelişmelerin niteliklerinin Londra’da daha iyi anlaşılmasını sağlamaya yönelik bir yaklaşım içinde olmamıştır. Bu sebeple İngiltere’de Osmanlılara yönelik bilgisizlik ve önyargıların daha da beslenmesine sebep olmuşlardır. İngiltere’nin İstanbul Büyükelçiliği’ne musallat olmuş zafiyet, sadece Lowther ve Fitzmaurice ile de sınırlı olmamış diğer görevlilerde son derece Osmanlı-karşıtı bir hissiyat ve eylem içinde olmuştur.
