Analyses of 316 Patients with Thoracic Trauma in the Second Level State Hospital

Objective: The aim of the study is to analyze the demographic data, pathologies and the treatment protocols of patients that were treated in a secondary state hospital.Material and Methods: The study included 316 patients that were treated in thoracic surgery clinic between February 2005 and April 2008 The records of patients were evaluated retrospectively. The cases were analyzed regarding age, sex, trauma groups (blunt or penetrating), ensuing pathologies (rib fracture, pneumothorax, hemothorax, contusion, etc) and treatment methods. Results: The mean age of all patients was 43±17,4 and male to female ratio was 271/45. Sixtysix percent of the cases had blunt and 34% had penetrating trauma. Mean age of patients with blunt and penetrating trauma were 48,8 and 32,5 years, and the difference between them was significant (p=0,001). The most common bone pathology was rib fracture with 54%. Rib fractures were more common in blunt trauma group. Pneumothorax, hemothorax, and subcutenous emphysema were significantly higher in penetrating trauma group (p=0,001). Ninety-nine cases (31,3%) were treated non-inavsively with medications. The most frequent invasive method was tube thoracostomy (62%). Twenty-one (6,6%) cases underwent thoracotomy.
