ABD’de 2004 Başkanlık Seçimlerinde dinsel söylemlerin etkisi bü- yük ve kimileri için şaşırtıcı olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, Amerikan siyasetinde din olgusunu incelenerek, seçimde ortaya çıkan sonucun doğal olduğu ifade edilmekte, ve bunun 25-30 yıllık bir gelişmenin ürünü olduğu gösterilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Bu amaçla, söz konusu seçimdeki seçmen profili ve bu profilin ortaya çıkmasına neden olan tarihsel ve sosyal gelişmeler, seçimde kritik bir rol üstlenen Amerikan Hıristiyan sağı ve toplumsal tabanı, Amerika’daki din ve devlet geleneği ve değişen dinsel anlayışlar bağlamında analiz edilmektedir.

The influence of religion and religious groups on the 2004 US presidential elections was utterly significant. This work analyzes the state of religion in American politics, and tries to show that the religious influence on the election was a natural outcome of religious developments of the last decades. To this aim, the profile of the voters and the historical and social developments that have generated that profile are analyzed in the context of church and state relations in America and the changing religious conceptions, as well as the Christian Right that played a critical role in the elections and its social bases.
