Bir toplumu incelerken ele alınacak sosyolojik unsurların başında nüfus gelmektedir. Nüfus, nicelik bakımından toplumlar hakkında veriler ortaya sunarken, aynı zamanda toplumların gelişmişlik düzeyi hakkında da bilgiler vermektedir. Nüfus olgusunun incelenmesi neticesinde bir toplumun yapısı hakkında önemli bilgiler elde edileceği gibi, bu bilgilerin kullanılması halinde toplumun gelişimi ile ilgili önemli adımların da atılacağı düşünülmektedir. Toplumların sosyolojik açıdan incelenmesinde demografik veriler, nüfusun coğrafi dağılışı, nüfusun yaş ve cinsiyet yapısı, nüfusun ekonomik ve sosyal bakımdan sahip oldukları olanaklar, eğitim ve sağlık hizmetlerinden yararlanılması ve nüfusun göç hareketi gibi durumlarına ulaşılabilmektedir. Özellikle bu alanda yapılan çalışmalarda görülen eksikliklerden hareketle bu çalışma, demografik veriler ışığında “Batman” ilinin sosyolojik analizini gerçekleştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışmada 2010 yılı demografik verilerine göre “yaş grupları”, “yerleşim yeri nüfusları”, “nüfusa kayıtlı olunan ile göre ikamet edilen il ve ilçeler”, “eğitim durumu”, “medeni durum” ve “ülke içi göç” başlıkları altında Batman ilinin demografik yapısının sosyolojik açıdan analizi yapılacaktır.
