Effects of Mental Fatigue on Athletes

Mental fatigue is a psychobiological condition caused by prolonged periods of challenging cognitive activity. Although there is no consensus on the formation mechanisms, the increase in the degree of perceived effort is the most accepted hypothesis. Visual analog scale, Brunel mood scale, and imaging techniques are used in the literature. Mental fatigue can be created by challenging cognitive tasks such as the Stroop and continuous-AX test, motor imagery, or the use of social media. It has been stated that long-term use of sports-based video games and social media in athletes causes mental fatigue and impairs perceptual-cognitive ability performance just before the training session or the match. Studies in this area can help coaches with mental fatigue management measures, such as using social media.
