Fighting with Radical Islam, Liberating Future from past and Rebuilding Afghanistan: A Kabul Story

This article aims to place the ongoing American intervention in Afghanistan within a historical context and discuss to what extent it represents a rupture from its predecessors or conversely to what extent it has been reproducing existing “fault lines” that had caused state failure in the country. It situates three sets of historical legacies, international, national and sub-national, that have been etched in the Afghan state-building and discusses the specific contexts where these factors are renegotiated and remolded in the ongoing ‘nation-building’ process.
