Medeniyetler Çatışması (mı?)

“Medeniyetler çatışması” günümüz dünyasındaki gelişmelere ilişkin tartışmalarda hâkim konumda olan yaygın bir kavramdır. Bu makalenin amacı, söz konusu kavramın mevcut çatışmaları açıklamada yeterli donanıma sahip olmadığını göstermektir. Makalede, birbirleriyle bağlantılı olan dincilik, etnik- milliyetçilik, aşiretçilik ve yoksulluk olgularının günümüzdeki çatışmaları anlamada daha işlevsel kavramlar oldukları hususu tartışılmakta ve bireyin kimliğinin ve kutsallığının temel referans olarak alınması gerektiği sonucuna varılmaktadır. Makaleye göre, kimliğin içindeki öz madde ne olursa olsun, onun dış kabuğunun, tüm farklı içeriklerinin barış ve uyum içinde gelişip serpilmelerine olanak sağlayacak şekilde seküler bir yapıda olması gerekmektedir.

Clash of Civilizations(?)

The popular notion of “the clash of civilizations” governs the ongoing discourse about the state of affairs in our world today. This article aims to show that the concept in question is not properly equipped to explain the causes and character of the clashes actually in progress on our planet. Instead, it is argued, the interrelated phenomena of religionism, ethnonationalism, tribalism and poverty are more functional concepts in understanding the sources of conflict in our times. It is concluded that the ultimate reference should be the identity and the sanctity of the individual. Whatever the core substance of that identity, its outer shell should be secular so as to allow all different identity contents to thrive in peace and harmony.
