Ülkemizde, kadın hakları konusunda en büyük gelişme Cumhuriyet döneminde olmuştur. Bunda şüphesiz ki Atatürk’ün rolü büyüktür. II. Meşrutiyetten itibaren, sosyal yardım amaçlı derneklerin kadın kollarında hanımların etkin görevler aldıkları ve çok değerli hizmetler yaptığı bilinmektedir. Özellikle savaş yıllarında gösterilen çabalar her türlü takdirin üzerindedir.
