EXARCHATE HISTORY OF AIGAI S (AIOLIS) BYZANTINE AGE

Aigai is one of the western Anatolian cities, the historical development of which is rather uncertain andcontroversial. it maintained strong socio-political connections with the nearby cities in the south andthe north. Despite serious changes in the geographic conditions the region experienced in the course ofhistory, Aigai persisted until the Byzantine supremacy in the region came to an end. Under the PergamonKingdom and the subsequent reign of Rome Aigai developed and after the reform of Diocletian (284 - 305)was integrated in the province Asia and became part of the Byzantine Ecclesia. Throughout the late an- cient period and the mid and late Byzantine periods, the name of the city appears in lists of synods andecumenical councils (9th - 13th century AD) as one of the subsidiary exarchates under the administrationof Ephesus. Based on these facts it has been attempted to set up the chronological framework of the cityby considering the historical geography of the region and its surroundings between the 5th and 13thcenturies AD.
