Bu çalışmada, 1934 doğumlu Fransız Antropolog Maurice Godelier'in "İnsan Toplumlarının Temelinde Antropolojinin Bize Öğrettikleri" isimli kitabı değerlendirilmektedir. Orijinal haliyle 2007 yılında Fransa’da yayımlanmış olan kitap, 2022 yılında Türkçeye çevrilmiştir. Aslına bakılırsa bu çalışma, Godelier’in neredeyse kırk yıllık entelektüel yolculuğunun bir tür panoraması olarak da okunabilir. Bu çalışma temelde birkaç bakımdan önemlidir: Öncelikle bu kitapta, Godelier’in Antropolojiye ve genel olarak Sosyal Bilimlere dair fikirlerinin açık ve bütünlüklü bir şekilde sunulmaktadır. Peki Godelier ve fikirlerini, diğer antropolog ya da etnologlardan ayıran nedir? Godelier’i, hem eğitim alanlarının genişliği ve hem de entelektüel yolculuğu esnasında karşılaştığı ve birlikte çalıştığı isimler (Fernand Braudel ve Claude Lévi-Strauss gibi) önemli kılmaktadır. Öte yandan Godelier’i diğer antropologlardan ayıran diğer temel faktör ise, onun hakim yargı ya da doğrulara meydan okuyabilme cesareti gösterilebilmesidir. Sonuç olarak Godelier, bu metniyle, yalnızca antropoloji nedir, nasıl yapılır ve antropolog kimdir gibi sorularının yanında, tüm bir sosyal bilimlerin varlığının ne denli önemli olduğunu ve her geçen gün disiplinlerarası çalışmaya olan ihtiyacın ne denli arttığını ortaya koymaktadır.

This is the review of the book "At the Foundation of Human Societies. What Anthropology Teaches Us?" by the 1934 French-born Anthropologist Maurice Godelier. The book, which was originally published in France in 2007 was translated into Turkish in 2022. In fact, this work can also be read as a kind of panorama of Godelier's almost forty-year journey. This work is important from several perspectives: This book presents a clear and complete presentation of Godelier's view on anthropology and the social sciences in general. So, what distinguishes Godelier and his ideas from other anthropologists or ethnologists? Godelier is important both in terms of his training's scope and the names he has encountered and worked with (such as Fernand Braudel and Claude Lévi-Strauss) during his intellectual journey. On the other hand, the other main factor that distinguishes Godelier from other anthropologists is his courage in challenging the prevailing judgment or the truth. In conclusion, Godelier, with this text, reveals not only the questions of what anthropology is, how it is done and who an anthropologist is, but also how important the social sciences are as a whole and the ever-increasing importance of interdisciplinary studies.
