The comparison between benzathine penicillin G, penicillin V and azithromycin in the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis in children

The efficacy and safety of benzathine penicillin C (BPC), penicillin V (PV) and azithromycin in the treatment of Streptococcal pharyngitis in pediatric patients were compared in this study. One hundred and ninety-seven patients aged between 1-17 years presented with symptoms of pharyngitis, who had positive throat culture-positive for beta hemolytic streptococci were enrolled. Among 197 culture-positive patients, 85 were treated by BPG, 57 were treated by PV and 55 were treated by azithromycin. Patients were evaluated for clinical and bacteriological improvement W days and 20 days following the initiation of treatment. Satisfactory clinical responses were recorded in all of the treatment groups. Throat culture -negativity rate was 95.6% in BPC treatment group, 97.8% in both PV and azithromycin treatment groups at the first visit. Recurrence rate was found 3.1 % in BPC, 2.3% in both PV and azithromycin treatment groups at the second visit. No serious adverse effect has seen in patients.
