EFFICACY OF FERROUS-GLYCINE-SULPHATE VERSUS FERRIC-HYDROXIDE- POLYMALTOSE COMPLEX, AND FERROUS-GLYCINE-SULPHATE AND ORAL ZINC SULPHATE COMBINATION IN CHILDREN WITH IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA: RETROSPECTIVE STUDY
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess treatment effects and the results of various oral iron preparations for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) treatment in preschool children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospectively, totally 150 children were included in this study. All data of the patients with IDA were obtained from their hospital folders. Children were randomized into three groups as follows: children who were treated with iron II-glycine-sulphate complex (iron II), iron III-hydroxide-polymaltose complex (iron III), and a preparation with iron II-zinc combination, respectively. RESULTS: Treatment with iron II was determined to be more effective than treatment with iron III or the iron II-zinc combination with regards to hematological tests and ferritin values after the treatment. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, it was determined that preparations containing only iron II are more effective in the treatment of IDA. We emphasize that iron II preparations should be used alone for IDA treatment considering the results obtained from the groups treated with iron III and iron II-zinc combination.
