Penile doppler ultrasonography: Techniques and interpretation

Penile Doppler ultrasonographic imaging and associated intracavernosal injection for functional evaluation provide objective measurement of erectile hemodynamics while it is used in the diagnosis of corporeal veno-occlusive dysfunction (VOD), arterial insufficiency, penile arteriovenous shunts, cavernosal fibrosis and Peyronie’s disease. The advantage of the penile Doppler ultrasound is that the procedure is minimally invasive and can be used as a screening test in patients to identify normal arterial response of the cavernous arteries. In Peyronie’s disease and to patients with erectile dysfunction unresponsive to treatment, Penile Doppler ultrasound should be offered before a history of pelvic trauma or fracture of the penile shaft or prior to more invasive vascular examinations. Since it is a technique dependent to the constructor, the established protocols should be standardized.
