The aim of this study was to compare deficit and non-deficit schizophrenic patients by means of immunological variables. Method: Fifty-six patients were enrolled in the study. They were divided into two groups as "deficit" and "nondeficit" according to "deficit syndrome" criteria reported by Carpenter et al. Plasma levels of Complement 3, Complement 4, IgA, IgG, IgM IgA and Lymphocyte subgroups were examined in all patents. The SPSS programme was used to compare the immunological variables. Results: IgE levels of the deficit group were higher (p0.02) and NK activity was lower (p0.005) significantly when compared with the deficit group. Conclusion: There is a difference between the two groups with respect to immunological variables. The elevated IgE levels of the deficit group in the absence of an allergic reaction suggest that there may be an autoimmune process contributing to the ethiopathogenesis of the deficit syndrome, since elevated levels of IgE is associated with Th2 type immune response.
