Effects of Grafting onto Different Rootstocks on Watermelon Plant Growth
Grafted seedlings have been used in watermelon production due to the absence of watermelon varieties which are resistant to all races of Fusarium wilt. The research carried out in greenhouses in the spring of 2019 and 2020. In the study, widely used hybrid commercial rootstocks Nun9075 and TZ148 from Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata group, Argentario (hybrid) and 3335 from Lagenaria group, and PI296341 from Citrullus amarus were used. As a scion 187, 125, 11and 162 watermelon inbred lines which are developed by Alata Horticultural Research Institute were used. Additionally, each line was self-grafted. Ungrafted plants were used as controls. In the research, parameters such as stem length, number of nodes on the main stem, main stem diameter, number of days from planting to first female flowering, number of days from planting to 50%female flowering were examined. In terms of main stem length, it can be said that the plants grafted on Lagenaria spp. and Cucurbita maxima×C. moschata hybrids generally gave higher results. Although the number of nodes in the main stem and the diameter of the main stem varies by years, higher results were obtained in those grafted on the Lagenaria spp. and Cucurbita maxima×C. moschata hybrids. Although the first female flowering time and 50%female flowering time varied by lines and years, it was observed that plants grafted on 3335 and control plants were earlier in flowering, but grafting did not has statistically significant effect.
