The Effect of Rootstocks on Fruit Quality of Watermelon

In fruit-bearing vegetables, the use of rootstocks against adverse environmental conditions and soil-borne diseases and pests is becoming common practice. Grafting has significant effects on the fruit quality of watermelon which is one of the most grafted vegetables. The physical properties of watermelon such as fruit size, rind thickness, flesh color, flesh firmness and chemical properties such as TSSC, sugar composition, aroma compounds, antioxidative compounds and mineral content can be affected by rootstocks. There are many conflicting reports about the effect of grafting on fruit quality in watermelon. These differences are attributed to rootstock/scion combinations, cultivation methods, environmental conditions, cultivation period and harvest timing. In this review, the effects of grafting on the physical and chemical quality criteria of watermelon are evaluated according to latest available literature. The review was concluded by stating possible studies aimed at increasing the product quality of watermelon and clarifying the effects of rootstock/scion combinations on product quality.
