A study on perceived computer literacy skills of teacher candidates

Abstract: Perceived computer usage skills of teacher candidates were investigated in this study. Duration of computer use, computer courses taken at primary and/or secondary school, computer attitudes, and computer self‐efficacy levels were taken into consideration. The research was conducted as a quantitative case study with 125 teacher candidates enrolled in various disciplines. The data was collected by various tools such as computer usage questionnaire, computer attitudes scale, and computer self‐efficacy scale. According to the findings teacher candidates perceive themselves as moderately computer literate. Except from literacy skills, computer usage skills are low among teacher candidates. Teacher candidates have moderate levels of computer attitudes and computer self‐efficacy. The results of the study revealed that there were significant differences regarding computer literacy skills, computer attitudes, and computer self‐efficacy levels among the ones who have taken and who have not taken a computer course at primary or secondary school. Furthermore, these variables significantly differ according to duration of computer use. Computer experience came out as a strong predictor of perceived computer literacy skills, computer attitudes, and computer self‐efficacy.
