Dumancık kistophor definesi

A cistophoric hoard from dumancık

A hoard of 22 cistophoric tetradrachmas, now called the Cistophoric Hoard of Dumancık, was found at Dumancık Mevkii of Başkuyu village of Yeşilova, Burdur, in 2009and was turned over to Burdur Archaeological Museum. The person who brought the hoard to the Museum reported that it was found at about20-30 cm. below the surface, in a rocky area covered with maquis. As they were not bur-ied in a container, all but two were coated with a thin layer of oxidation and dirt. The re- verses are in better condition than the obverses. Two of the coins, namely inv. nos. 32033and 32038, are worthy of note for their good condition. Possibly they were incorporated tothe hoard at a later date. Our visit to the area brought to our attention a rock tomb calledPencere İni located about 1.5 km. (bird’s flight) east of the findspot and a höyük, almostentirely leveled off, in the Başkuyu Köyü plains to the northwest. The hoard comprises only cistophoric tetradrachms: 17 from Pergamon (two of whichare the better preserved ones), 3 from Ephesos, 1 from Smyrna and 1 from Tralles. Thecoins of Ephesos bear alphabetical dates in the era of Province of Asia, which started in134/133 BC, on their reverses as follows: EK (= 25 = 109 BC), LB (= 32 = 102 BC) and MH(= 48 = 86 BC).The earliest dated tetradrachms of the hoard are: Pergamon no. 1 (ca. 128 BC), Ephesosno. 18 (109/108 BC), Smyrna no. 21 (before 133 BC) and Tralles no. 22 (134/133 BC). Onthe other hand, the latest coins are those of Pergamo, dated to about 67 BC. Thus, thehoard must have been buried in about the second quarter of the 1 st century BC.The Pergamene examples contained evidence for 14 magistrates – two monograms and12 bearing the two initial letters of the name. The Ephesian example (no. 18) has a letterM united with the kerykeion; The Smyrnaian example has a monogram; The Trallesianexample has PTOL probably standing for PTOLEMAIOS . The monograms on Pergamonnos. 2, 10 and 16, Ephesos no. 18 and Smyrna no. 21 could not be paralleled in any of thepublications researched.Cistophors of Smyrna have only been encountered in the Dumancık Hoard and anoth-er one, namely IGCH 1459, discovered in 1935; therefore, it suggests that the city minted very few cistophors.Trallesian cistophor (no. 22 in the catalogue) with the magistrate abbreviation PTOL does not bear any marks for date but it indicates the first year in office of the magistrate. This magistrate is known to have served in the third quarter of the 2 nd century BC and hestayed in the office for nine years. In other years dates were added to the cistophors
