Evaluation of oroantral fistulae treatments by using auricular cartilage method
Aim: Various surgical techniques have been described for the closure of oroantral fistulas. Beside any conventional techniques, such as; simple vestibular mucosal flaps, rotational pedicled palatinal flaps or buccal flaps etc., some new methods and approaches were described. One of the newly described methods is the closure of oroantral fistulas using auricular cartilage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of auricular cartilage usage for the treatment of oroantral fistulas. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, 19 patients treated with oroantral fistulas were analysed retrospectively to evaluate the effect of auricular cartilage method used in combination with rotational palatinal island flap for the success of the treatment. Results: Successful treatment results were obtained from the patients who were treated by using auricular cartilage in combination with rotational island flap. In addition, no postoperative complications were encountered. Conclusion: It was concluded that, rotational palatinal island flaps in combination with auricular cartilage technique was found as a useful method to treat oroantral fistulas.
