Üniversite Ö¤rencilerinin Anadili ‹ngilizce Olan ve Türk Yabanc› Dil Ö¤retmenlerinin S›n›f Yönetimi Uygulamalar›na Dair Alg›lar›: Kültürel Bir Bak›fl Aç›s›

Kültür ile yak›ndan iliflkili olan s›n›f yönetimi süreci, etkili ö¤retimin önemli bir unsurudur. Bu araflt›rmada Türk üniversite ö¤rencilerinin kendi kültürlerinden ve di¤er kültürlerden (Kuzey Amerika ve ‹ngiltere) ö¤retmenlerinin s›n›f yönetimi uygulamalar›na dair alg›lar› incelenmifltir. Araflt›rman›n temel amac›, ö¤rencilerin ve ö¤retmenlerin kültürel altya- p›lar›n›n s›n›f yönetimi uygulamalar›na ve ö¤rencilerin bu yöndeki bek- lentilerine nas›l yans›d›¤›n›n anlafl›lmas›d›r. Araflt›rma, araçsal durum ça- l›flmas› deseninde nitel bir çal›flma olup veriler s›n›f gözlemi ve odak grup yöntemi ile büyük bir devlet üniversitesinin Yabanc› Diller Yüksekoku- lunda e¤itim gören 53 ö¤renciden befli Türk, befli yabanc› 10 ö¤retim gö- revlisine iliflkin olarak elde edilmifltir. Araflt›rma bulgular›, Türk ve ya- banc› ö¤retmenlerin s›n›f disiplini, ö¤renci-ö¤retmen iliflkisi ve pedagojik uygulamalar aç›s›ndan farkl› alg›land›¤›n› ortaya koymufltur. Bulgular ay- r›ca ö¤rencilerin disiplin ve ö¤retme yöntemlerine iliflkin beklentilerinin de kültürel özelliklere göre de¤ifliklik gösterdi¤ini ortaya koymaktad›r. Araflt›rma bulgular› s›n›f yönetimi ve kültürün etkileflimini göstermesi ve genifl çapl› yap›lacak nicel araflt›rmalara ön veri kazand›rmas› aç›s›ndan önemlidir.

Students’ Perceptions of Classroom Management Practices of Native and Local Foreign Language Teachers in a Turkish University: A Cultural Perspective

Being closely related to culture, classroom management is a main compo- nent of effective teaching. In this study, the perceptions that Turkish uni- versity students have of classroom management practices of teachers from their own culture and other cultures (North America and England) are explored. The main purpose of the study is to understand how the cultural backgrounds of students and teachers are reflected in the expectations and practices regarding classroom management. The study was designed as a qualitative instrumental case study. The data were gathered through class- room observations and student focus groups from 53 students from the School of Foreign Languages of a large state university with respect to the classroom management practices of five native and five local teachers. The results revealed that students’ perceptions of classroom management prac- tices of local and native teachers differed in terms of classroom discipline, teacher-student relationships, and pedagogical practices. Students’ expecta- tions of discipline and teaching styles also varied in relation to their cultur- al backgrounds. Overall, the findings of this research are important in showing the interaction of classroom management with culture and in pro- viding data for future qualitative research.
