Avrupa entegrasyon çalışmaları ile ilgili kuramsal gelişmeler uzun yıllardır sürmektedir. Bu gelişme sürecinde ilk görülenler federalism, işlevselcilik ve transactionalismdir. Bu kuramları yeni işlevselcilik ve kurumsal liberalism/ hükümetlerarası kurumlaşmacılık tartışmaları takip etmiştir. 1990’lardan beri uluslararası ilişkiler disiplinindeki diğer sosyal kuram alanlarındaki çalışmalardan esinlenerek artan eleştirel ve sosyal inşaacı yaklaşımlardan etkilen entegrasyon kuramları yeni bir tartışmanın içine girmiştir. Pozitivizm sonrası adlandırabileceğimiz bu yeni dönemde rasyonel kuramlar sorgulanmış ve eleştirel kuramlar ile sosyal inşaacı kuram geliştirilmiştir. Epistomolojik ve ontolojik karşılaştırmada rasyonel ve inşaacı yaklaşımlar farklılaşırken, aynı zamanda AB’nin uluslararası rolü, kimliği ve güvenliğini de farklı kavramsallaştırmaktadırlar. Ama sosyal inşaacı yaklaşım rasyonel kuramların yerine geçmekten ziyade onları tamamlayıcı unsurlara sahiptir. Bu çalışma, farklı yaklaşımların Avrupa entegrasyonunun farklı yönlerine ışık tuttuğunu göstermeye çalışmıştır.

Theoretical progress on the European integration studies is going on since many years. Federalism, functionalism and transactionalism are the first theoretical approaches observed about the integration theories. Following these approaches there was a debate between neo-functionalism and liberal institutionalism/ intergovernmental institutionalism. Since the 1990s as there was a rise of variety of critical and constructivist approaches in the International Relations Theory, a new phase of integration theories is observed. This new phase which might be called post-positivist focuses on the questions about 'constructing' European integration -involving the critical and constructivist approaches. Different from the rationalist approaches both epistemologically and ontologically social constructivists have developed alternative conceptualization of the role, identity and security of the European Union. Yet, social constructivists rather than replacing them contributed to the rationalist approaches. This article suggests that different approaches shed light to different dimensions of the European integration.
