POSTMODERN NOVEL: FICTION, LANGUAGE AND CHARACTER
The postmodernism which manifests itself in new structures and synthesis changing many entrenched patterns also shows this characteristic to create fiction , language- style and characters in novel genre.Characters in postmodern novels are separated by significant differences from those of classic and modern novels. Postmodernist view free the novel characters from their familiar roles and tasks. In postmodern novels it is almost impossible to encounter a character who has a positivist perspective and idealistic, dedicated himself to serving the community , giving importance to ethics and voicing it at every opportunity. In postmodern novels characters do not sit in the centre of the novel with their individual problems and inner turmoils. The privileges granted to the central person in classic novels is reduced as much as possible in postmodern novels. The purpose of these kind of novels is " the language ", the text itself. The author's aim is not bringing an idea or a person to the fore . His job is dealing with the text , with fiction , with the words currently used .Fiction in the postmodern novel is quite an interesting topic, and it might be said that the postmodern novel mostly differ from classical and modern types with this regard. In the postmodern novels dominated by metafiction intertextuality, parody and pastiche are the methods which are often used . The author confronts readers both with the text he created and the text he makes references through the methods such as parody and pastiche .Readers may read several texts at the same time. In postmodern novels plot is not created according to known rules . Some postmodernist writers may even seen not to have concerns like trying to build a solid plot . It would be true to connect this case that the "event" element has lost its importance in the postmodern novels .However, the event in a classic novel is a dominant element . It has lost its former importance in modern novels but it has never been so obscured as in postmodern novels . It is clear that the language used in the texts prior to spreading a postmodern understanding has never been seen as a goal but it has always been considered as a tool . However, the language in the postmodern novel confronts its readers as a fundamental objective using the language , richness of the language and the mobility etc. At the same time we need to add that the language appears to be the origin of existential questioning in postmodern texts and the plane that these problems examined in. Postmodern perspective does not accept language restrictions . Postmodern novels are open works to use all the language elements .In postmodern novels all areas of language, from spoken language to proverbs , from slangs to false words, can be observed because a postmodern novel is the language itself.
