Oldukça ayırımcı topolojik bir sayı olarak iddia edilen, toplam ortalama mesafe bağımlılığı (J); bir karınca türü, Iridomyrmex pruinosus 'da alarm etkili bazı bileşiklerin aktiviteleri üzerinde topolojik etkilerin incelenmesi için kullanılmışdır. Aynı sınıf bileşiklerin J değerleri ile aktiviteleri arasında fazla mükemlel olmıyan bir paralellik olduğu bulunmuşdur.

A topological index (J), which is claimed to be highly discriminating and is known as the average-distance-sum-connectivity index, was used to investigate the topologicai effects on the activity ratings of certain compounds eliciting the alarm response of the ant, Indomyrmex pruinosus. It was found that within the same class of compounds studied the corresponding J values exhibited certain but not perfect parallelism with their activity.
