Evrensel tasarım tüm insanların eşit şartlarda kullanabileceği tasarım ürün ve sonuçlarını ifade etmektedir. Evrensel tasarım, farklı boyutta, cinsiyette, yaşta, yetenekte; tüm kullanıcıların aynı haklardan yararlanmalarını öngörmektedir. Evrensel tasarımın; eşit erişilebilir ve uyarlanabilir tasarımdan farklılığı her durum ve herkes için eşit erişilebilir ve eşit kullanılabilir çevre, mekân, yapı elemanı, ekipman ve ürün sunulması düşüncesidir. Bu çalışmada evrensel tasarım çeşitli yönleri ile ele alınarak tanıtılmaktadır. Son birkaç yılda yaygınlık kazanan evrensel tasarım kavramının hangi prensiplerle tasarım süreci içinde yer aldığı bu çalışmanın temel çerçevesini oluşturmaktadır.

Universal design means products and design results which can be used by all type of users in equal conditions. It suggests to benefit the same rights for all users who had different size, sex, age and ability. The difference of universal design from adaptable and equal accessible design is that it proposes equal accessible and equal usable environments, spaces, building elements, equipments and products for all type of users, for all positions. Universal design is introduced in this study with its special characteristics. The current principles of universal design concept are defined in the context of the study.
