General constructional features of the gill nets used for fishing whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) and red mullet (Mullus barbatus) in Sürmene region.
General Constructional Features of the Gill Nets Used for Fishing Whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) and Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus) in Sürmene Region. In this study constructional features of gill nets widely used for fishing whiting (M. merlangus euxinus) and red mullet (M. barbatus) is Sürmene region were examined and annual average catches per unit effort were determined. The above mentioned fishing gears are of two types. The one used for catching whiting is gill net and the other for red mullet is called trammel net. By taking the net length as a measure of fishing power, the values of catch per unit efoort were found to be 1.93 kgm"1 for whiting nets and 0.42 kgm"1 for red mullet nets. It was computed that he hanging ratios for-the gill nets are 0.30 to 0.33 and around 0.50 for the trammel nets. The average ratio for trammel/net was found to be 0.73. The study concludes that fishing gears, which are constructed by tradiotional methods, have some negative points in comparison with proposed design by the literature.
