Accessibility of Physical Activity Facilities in Local Surroundings According to Elderly with Disabilities

The aim of the study was to identify the main factors thatinfluence the accessibility of physical activity facilities inthe opinion of elderly residents with disabilities in Lithuania. The questionnaire was developed according torecommendations of Lithuanian Governmental PhysicalEducation and Sport Department and European Physical Activity Guidelines (2008) and consisted of 17 questions about the demand for participation and the type ofparticipation in physical activity, reasons for inactivityand environmental conditions. 150 respondents (age 71.2± 3.6) from different places of Lithuania filled in questionnaire anonymously. The data analysis showed that86% of respondents were irregularly engaged in unin- structed physical activity. 94% of respondents had no information about possibilities to engage in structure ex- ercise training of older people in their community. Somerespondents pointed out the lack of basic knowledgeabout physical activities that prevent them from practicing independently. The main reasons of inactivity were:health condition, not appropriate sport facilities in locality, overpriced physical activity facilities. Women admitted to have lack of will power. Only 32% of respondentsnoticed that organized physical activity facilities areaccessible. Conclusion: Physical activity of older peoplecould be increased by improving accessibility of physical activity facilities in local communities and providingmore information about the different possibilities to benot only physically but also socially active and involvedin organized activities.
