Global Crisis, Search for Identity and Sociology

In his address at the beginning of the V. National Sociology' Congress in Malatya, Turkey, after reviewing the dimensions of the global social crisis, Mustafa Koç explores how sociologist should approach the questions of identity and solidarity. Koc argues that sociology arose out of the efforts to understand and explain contradictions of the modern industrial society. At the beginning of the 21st Century, we are living a similar social, economic and political crisis under the influence of global pressures, restructuring policies and geopolitical tensions. In a world where social inequalities and global injustice are multiplying, a sociology which loolts at the identity question as a cultural issue, as a a pathological social deviance, or a an issue of social solidarity that needs to be resolved, would lose its relevance in the eyes of the oppressed and subordinated classes. Koc argues that a sociology that is critical, on the side of the oppressed, in tune with the its own community while seeking universals will be more effective in offering the right diagnoses and bringing the right solutions to the crises of the 21st Centuiy.
