Background: Traditional plaque indices have limitations due to their subjectivity and their failure to detect small but clinically important changes in plaque area. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlations between established plaque indices and computer assited image analysis method for the quantification of dental plaque. Methods: After plaque disclosure non-standardized intra-oral fullmouth digital photographs were obtained from 20 patients. Plaque indices of Sillness Löe (Pl) and Turesky modification of QuigleyHein (GHI--T), Löe and Sillness gingival index and probing depth measurements were recorded on Ramfjord teeth. Disclosed plaque area (PA) on photographs was analysed with SigmaScan Pro software. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationships. The inter and intra--examiner agreement was statistically evaluated for photographic examinations. Results: PA measurements showed high correlations with Pl and QHl-T indices. Overall PA measurements also demonstrated excellent (>0,80) inter and intra--examiner repeatability. Conclusion: In the limitations of this study, quantification of dental plaque with image analysis is safe, rapid, practical and sensitive method that could be used both in clinical patient motivation and epidemiological studies.
