Trages of Early Setlement in Parion

Parion was an important coastal city heated on the southern shore of the Sea Marmara (Ancient Propontis) in ancient Troad. The site is heated on the Balıklıçeşme district of the Kemer Village in the Biga Town of Çanakkale Province. According to ancient sources, Parion was established by immigrants from Miletus, Erythrae and Paws during the period of Greek colonization. A team under the direction of Prof. Dr. C. Başaran from the Atatürk University has been carrying out archaeological excavations at the site since 2005. Archaological excavations undertaken in the southern necropolis of the ancient site of Parion during the course of 2005 season yielded a series of pot-sherds representing various phases. These uncontextual pot-sherds have been found outside the graves at various parts of the excavated trenches. Most of these the sherds belonged to vessels of Corinthian and Western Anatolian Orientalizing styles, as well as Hellenistic Attic shapes such as crater, oinochoe, alabastron, kylix, skyphos, bowls and goblets. The pottery evidence from the necropolis area provides as with useful information about the earlier history of the site and points to Parion's commercial and economic role during the Archaic period and onwards.
