The Restoration of Erzurum Saray Bath
Saray Bath which is the best example of the baths in Erzurum during the Otoman period was built by Derviş Agha in 1707. acording to the inscription on the entrance gate. Saray Bath has a plan of classic Otoman period bath including the part of changing room, tepidity, earmth and stoke hole. Unfortunately this historical bath has removed from it historical characteristics because of some repair work and addition throughout time. This article attempts to introduce the stages concerning the periods before the restoration, during the restoration and after the restoration carried out by District Head Office of Erzurum Foundation/ Trust between 2006-2007. Restoration is not only the repair of a building but also an aesthetic work resting on scientific research. The meaning of this aesthetic work is to protect the historical and artistic unity that the ancient building, with shoult be protected, possesses. Unless well-prepared programs, large budgets and expert teams including enough people exist, getting successful results is difficult in restorations. Apart from the effort and experience of the experts earring out the restoration work, it is extremely important to have experienced masters taking part in restoration.
