The reconfiguration problem of manufacturing systems

Manufacturing environments are becoming increasingly volatile nowadays. For sustaining competitiveness and agility under this unpredictable environment new design strategies for the reconfiguration of production facilities should be developed. In the literature several strategies are proposed for designing and reconfiguring manufacturing systems to meet the challenges of the dynamic manufacturing environments. Some of these newly emerged strategies are named as: Biological manufacturing systems, Kolonie manufacturing systems, Fractal manufacturing systems and Virtual cellular manufacturing systems. These methodologies are still under development and research on them is still continuing all around the world. In this paper a review and discussion of these methodologies in relation to manufacturing systems reconfiguration is given, hi the paper an integrated framework, which is mainly based on multiple objective simulation optimisation is also introduced and discussed.
