MULTİDİSİPLİNER BİR KAVRAM OLARAK “FEAR OF MİSSİNG OUT” (FOMO): LİTERATÜR TARAMASI

FEAR OF MISSING OUT (FOMO) AS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONCEPT: LITERATURE REVIEW

With social media becoming an active tool in daily life, the interest in following the lives of others has increased. Besides, social media tools have made this access more reachable. Because of the excessive use of social media, people find themselves in the middle of a constant information bombardment, but they cannot keep up with every experience due to limited time and other restrictions. This feeling of not being able to catch up and being deprived of good experiences creates a fear of missing out, or in other words, FOMO. Although FOMO is a phenomenon explicitly paired with social media and internet use, people can experience FOMO in the offline world as well. FOMO has relatively new literature, and upcoming studies will shed light on the development of the concept. The current research aims to examine the expansion of FOMO from its birth, and we look into how various disciplines have inspected the phenomenon. This paper explains the connection between FOMO and problematic smartphone use, and then we approach FOMO from a psychological and physiological point of view. Besides, the present paper also discusses how FOMO is the subject of studies in Turkey. The relationship between Covid-19 and FOMO is examined, and suggestions for future studies are included. The research contributes to the literature in terms of offering a broad framework for FOMO literature.
