Comparison of Classical and Experimental Teaching Methods For Successful Learning and Chemistry Attıtude Of Acid-Base Concept Among High School Students

In this study, we investigated the effect of classical and experimental teachingmethods on successful learning of acid-base concept in chemistry. Two (grade 10) classesfrom a high school were selected. Students in one class were instructed by classical methodand their success in learning was compared with that of the other class in which experimentalmethod was applied.During the course of the study, part of instruction was made in the laboratory toenable the students to perform experiments within a group. In addition, Chemistry AttituteTest were applied to the students to evaluate if the experimental method had influenced theirattitudes towards chemistry. Logical Thinking Ability Test, Scientific Achievement Test wereapplied to collect the data.It was found that the instruction by the experimental method improved the studentssuccess in learning the acids and bases subject significantly compared to the overall successof the students taught by the classical method . It did not, however, change the attitudes of thestudents to chemistry as indicated by the scores of the Chemistry Attitude Test (CAT) appliedat the beginning and end of the study.
