A Scale Development Study Towards Teacher Leadership Styles

This study was designed to develop a teacher leadership styles scale. McGregor’s Xand Y Theories were accepted as the therotical base for the development of the scale. As it is clearly known, the roots of McGregor’s X and Y Theories base on thebehaivourist leadership theory. McGregor’s X and Y Theories have a bipolar structure.According to McGregor’s X and Y Theories the leadership behaivour of those who madeTheory X would be autocratic and directive, while those with Theory Y would be democraticand participative. The main reason for using McGregor’s X and Y Theories for thedevelopment of the scale is that leaders assumptions about the behaivours of people are one ofthe major predictors of their behaivour. Depending on this assumption it is thought thatteachers’ perceptions about student behaivour would play an important role to lead theirleadership styles.During the development phases of the scale, expert view and item rest technique wereused for validity and internal cosistency (cronbach α ) was found for relaibility. The data werecollected from 137 high school teachers from different schools and fields. In the first phase,30 statements (items) were collected basing on the expert views, and related literature. Itemrest analysis were performed and items loaded 0,40 and above were kept for the last form ofthe scale. The scale consisted of 17 items after these analysis. The internal consistency of thescale was found as α=0,88 for the scale.Teacher leadership style scale is found to be valid and reliable to determine theleadership styles of teachers, especially in their relation to the students.Key words: Leadership, teacher leadership, leadership scale
