Uzun bir geçmişi olmakla birlikte, türev ürünlerin finansal sistem içerisinde önemli yer tutmaya başlamaları 1970’li yıllarda mümkün olmuştur. Tezgah üstü (OTC) piyasalar ve borsalarda işlem gören bu ürünler esas olarak fiyat dalgalanmalarının açığa çıkardığı riskleri ortadan kaldırmak amacıyla kullanılmaktadırlar. Piyasanın ağırlıklı kısmını oluşturan OTC piyasalarında opsiyonlar ve swaplar üzerinden yapılan işlemler toplam finansal işlemler içerisinde çok önemli bir yer tutmaktadır.
Derivative products have been known very long time. Even though, derivative product transactions started to take place considerably in 1970s in financial system. Those products which are traded in over-the-counter (OTC) markets and exchanges are basically used to remove the risks that price fluctuations expose. Option and swap transactions in OTC markets, which constitute big share of the market, are getting a bigger foot in total financial transactions.
