Full load exhaust emission characteristics of a biodiesel fueled low heat rejection diesel engine

In this study, effect of biodiesel on exhaust emissions of a Low Heat Rejection (LHR) diesel engine has been investigated experimentally. Biodiesel was produced from refined sunflower oil by transesterification method. Biodiesel fuel was used in a turbocharged direct injected diesel engine at full load conditions. Then, cylinder head and valves of the test engine were coated with yttria stabilized zirconia ($Y _2O _3ZrO _2$) layer 0.35 mm thick over a NiCrAl bond coat 0.15 mm thick by atmospheric plasma spray coating method. As a result of the engine tests, while exhaust gas temperature, smoke opacity and $CO _2$ emissions were decreased 9 %, 56% and 16 %, respectively, $NO _x$ emission was increased by 38% with biodiesel usage. It was determined that exhaust gas temperature and $NO _x$ emissions were increased 13%, 20% respectively, smoke opacity was decreased 10% with LHR application.
