THE GUIDE OF HAPPY LIVING: DE VITA BEATA

The aim of this article is to introduce Seneca’s concept of happy living, as developed in his work De Vita Beata (On Happy Living). To this end, I first outline Seneca’s and notion of ideal living in parallel with Stoic philosophy. Secondly, I detail ideas of good (bonum), the highest good (summum bonum) and virtue (virtus), which appear in De Vita Beata. Finally, I retrace the steps of these ideas, to reach nature (natura) and its harmony (harmonia), as well as the satate of being wise (sapiens). In conclusion, the happy living is found in Seneca’s wise man, the only person who can find real and lasting happiness in this world
