Balkanlar'da seyreden Osmanlı-Eflâk Harbi'nin tüm aşamaları, Kahire'de oynanan ve hamleleri doğrudan Osmanlı ordularıyla Eflâk ve Macar güçleri üzerinde netice veren metafizik bir satrançla şekillenir. Bu savaş oyunu, yaşı bir hayli ilerlemiş dervişle sevdasına tutulduğu genç Hıristiyan arasında düşsel bir ilgiyle başlar ve etraflarında kozmik kuvvetlerin çarpıştığı gerçekliğe dönüşür. Bu ilişki, gerçek zaman, mekân ve kişilerle gelişen ve merkezinde ihsanın yer aldığı büyük bir fetih hareketiyle neticelenir. Bu gerçek hikâye, Tanrı'nın tasarruf yetkisi verdiği bir "ricâlü'l-gayb"ın etrafında gelişir. Bu kişi, Muhyî'dir. Ana mihverinde döndüğü "ihsan" temasından dolayı İhsân-nâme adını alan hikâye, Mesnevi nazım şekliyle, "mefâîlün mefâîlün feûlün" vezniyle kaleme alınmış, toplam 432 beyitten oluşur.
