Reduced glutathione and malendialdehyde levels with catalase enzyme activity in the heart, skeletal muscle and liver of lambs with white muscle disease
The aim of this study was to determine lipid peroxidation (LPO) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and the activity of catalase enzyme (CAT: EC, 1.11.1.6) in the heart, skeletal muscles and liver of lambs with White Muscle Disease (WMD). Fifeteen lambs with WMD and 15 healthy Morkaraman lambs were the subject of this study. Reduced glutathione levels in the heart and skeletal muscles were significantly (p<0.001) reduced in affected lambs with the disease. The reduction in CAT enzyme activity was highly significant (p<0.001 ) in the skeletal muscles of affected lambs and significant (p<0.01) in the heart muscles. However, the reduction in the same parameters was not significant (p>0.05) in the liver. Lipid peroxidation levels in the heart and skeletal muscles of affected lambs were significantly (p<0.01. p<0.001 ) increased although the increase in the liver was not significant (p>0.05).
