PYROLYSIS OF COTTON WASTE
Cotton stalks that have a
great potential for our country as a biomass candidate has been pyrolyzed in a
fixed-bed tubular reactor. Experiments have been conducted at pyrolysis
temperatures of 400, 500, 550, 700°C with a low heating rate of 5°C min-1
under a nitrogen atmosphere with a sweep gas flow rates of 50, 100, 200cm3
min-1 and the effect of pyrolysis temperature and sweep gas flow
rates have been investigated. The maximum bio-oil yield of 26.0 % was obtained
in N2 atmosphere (100 cm3 min-1) at a
pyrolysis temperature of 550°C. The pyrolysis products were characterized by
elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H-NMR spectrums and calorific values
were determined. Bio-oil was then fractionated by using column chromatography.
The molar compositions of subfractions were determined by elemental analysis
and the hydrocarbon distribution of n-pentane fraction was determined by GC.
