Investigations on the prenatal and postnatal development of rat proximal and distal colon at light microscopical level
In this investigation, the morphological development of the proximal and dis¬tal colon during prenatal and postnatal periods was proposed in rats at the light microscopical level. For this, 13- day old embryonal, 17- and 19- day old fetal, 10 day old postnatal and 1-year old adult Wistar albino rats have been used in this study. In the 13 day-old embryos several narrow channels were present in colonic mucosa, four day later, a single lumen had developed. During the following days, extensive folding of the mucosa proceeded the development of the crypts of Lieberkühn. By light microscopy only one type of cell could be distinguished in the colonic mucosa of the 17- day old rat embryos. Two day later, three different cell types were readily identified such as the columnar cell, the goblet cell, and the enterochromaffin cell. Ten days later, long thick villi were frequently seen in proximal colonic mucosa. As opposed to the proximal segment, a flat mucosa interspersed with well defined short crypts at birth was observed in the distal colon. Villi were absent in the adult rat. In conclusion, it can be said that, the colon has different properties in the periods of embrional and fetal from the adult colon.
